The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) has awarded a Colvin Award grant of $5,000 to the Delta‑Xray Group, organizers of the much‑anticipated 3YØK DXpedition to Bouvet Island, scheduled for February–March 2026.
Bouvet Island is one of the most remote and glacier‑covered islands on the planet, and activating it for amateur radio is considered a landmark undertaking. The recently announced grant adds financial support to the team’s extensive logistical planning for this high‑stakes expedition.
Team leaders plan to establish two camps on the island, each comprising three rugged tents for operating, sleeping, and communal use. Operations will span all HF bands and include modes such as CW, SSB, FT8, RTTY, and transmissions via the geostationary QO‑100 satellite.
The expedition will launch from Cape Town on or around February 1, weather permitting. Due to Bouvet’s harsh terrain and climate, access to the island and movement of equipment will rely on helicopter airlifts from the support vessel. The team expects to spend roughly three weeks on‑site conducting radio operations.
For DXers worldwide who still need Bouvet Island for their DXCC honor roll, this expedition represents perhaps the best opportunity to make the contact. Success depends heavily on favorable conditions, robust gear, and the expertise and determination of the expedition team.
